Who Said Faith Was Easy?

Faith is the hardest thing to have.  It tests us more than anything else in the world.  Faith does not promise us that life will be easy.  It does not pretend like everything will work out the way we want it.  It doesn’t tell us what we want to hear and it doesn’t give us what we would like.  Faith can’t protect us from death or stop bad things from happening to us.  It isn’t something we should have when life is good and forget about when life is tough.  Faith does not leave us we leave it.  It is up to the individual to decide if faith is a fad that comes and goes or if it is something you will have everyday of your life for a lifetime.  We can not have faith when we deem it necessary or not, or what is the point of having it at all?

It is easy for us to have it when life is going great and things seem to be working out our way.  When the sun is shining, when we are healthy, when work is good, when life is good, and everything seems to be going right, that is when everyone seems to have faith.  That is when everyone says thank you.  That is when faith is at its strongest.

So where does it go when things take a turn for the worse?  When a loved one dies, someone gets sick, or when we fall on bad times and only clouds seem to be surrounding us, where is our faith then?  Why do we seem to just leave it outside with the door bolted shut while we try and handle everything on our own?  Can we stop what is happening?  Can we change the facts?  Can we finagle what is to come in the future?  We live in a broken world where only faith can give us the comfort that we seek when our days are at their darkest.  I grew up always hearing the quote, “God never gives us more than we can handle.”  I used to believe in that, until I started getting older and wondering; just how much is one person suppose to handle?  Then I heard someone say this; “God allows more than we can handle because we live in this fallen world.  There are no guarantees.” That made much more sense to me and also helped me understand just where and why faith is so important.

Faith is hope.  Hope that things will get better, hope that one day we will see our loved ones again, and hope that the light always cast out the darkness.  Faith is love.  The kind of love God has given us by sending us His son Jesus.  It is the kind of love that always pursues us, even when we have lost our faith.  Faith is grace.  It is grace that allowed His son to be sacrificed for our sins so that we could be forgiven.  It is grace that gives us the opportunity to be reunited with our loved ones.

Faith is hope, love, and grace and so when we have faith we get to experience hope, love, and grace right along with it.  In our darkest moments it is faith that will be able to comfort us, help us move on, and allow us to be free.  Because of our faith we know there is nothing this world can throw at us that can take away from what God has given us.  There are no chains strong enough to hold us down through the power of faith.  Faith is the toughest thing we will struggle with but the best thing we can have.

Hebrews 11:1  “Faith is the confidence that what we hope for will actually happen; it gives us assurance about things we cannot see.”
